Isaac, during a famine, went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar. God appeared to Isaac and promised to bless him and his descendants. Isaac stayed in Gerar and lied about his wife, Rebekah, being his sister out of fear. Abimelek discovered the truth and warned his people not to harm Isaac or his wife. Isaac became wealthy, and the Philistines envied him, so they stopped up the wells his father's servants had dug.
